29, 1821. U.S. Representative from New York, 1861-1863, 1871-1875 (22nd
District 1861-1863, 1871-1873, 23rd District 1873-1875). Died July

LANSING, William Esselstyne, a Representative from New York; born in
Perryville, Madison County, N.Y., December 29, 1821; attended the common
schools; was graduated from Cazenovia Seminary in 1841; studied law in
Utica, N.Y.; was admitted to the bar in 1845 and commenced practice in
Chittenango; district attorney of Madison County 1850-1853; president of
the village of Chittenango 1853-1855; county clerk 1855-1858; elected as
a Republican to the Thirty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1861-March 3, 1863);
was not a candidate for renomination in 1862; elected to the Forty-second
and Forty-third Congresses (March 4, 1871-March 3, 1875); was not a candidate
for renomination; resumed the practice of law in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1876
and died there July 29, 1883; interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Chittenango,
N.Y.
