August 19 (1803)
"Rode on from (Hamilton) with a view to spend the approaching Sabbath in Pompey Hollow ? accompanied several miles thro' the woods by Christian friends ? Rode to Cazenovia, Rev. Mr. Leonard ? He is settled here among a stupid, vicious, infidel people."

August 20 (1803)
(Upon arrival at Pompey Hollow Rev. Cooley found that they had a minister, so he then went on to New Woodstock where they had Baptist preaching.  From there he went on to "Dryter" [DeRuyter] where they were all Baptists.)  This prompted him to write "I am perplexed and hardly know what to do with myself"  (Cooley finally went on to Fabius, 5 miles distant from DeRuyter, where the settlers were happy to see him as "one of their number had died"

August 22 (1803)
"Preached at Mr. Cote's in Cazenovia [Samuel Ruggles Cotes, just west of New Woodstock] ? visited a school ? Rode to Dereiter [DeRuyter] and preached an evening lecture to a large collection."

September 19 (1803)
(Rev. Cooley preached at "Dereiter" [DeRuyter] and at [New] Woodstock, and remarked that ... ) "There is evidently some serious attention to religion in this place."

In other comments Rev. Cooley noted that "No. 2 in Hamilton [present Town of Eaton] contains above 100 families ? stupid ? vicious ? divided ? no church ? some baptists ? ought to be noticed by Missionaries" and that the residents are "divided, loose and stupid."  He also commented that he found the people of Tully "corrupt and stupid."
